Cimarrón is the third part of a photographic series started in 2013 by Charles Fréger and dedicated to research on the African populations that have risen against slavery in the Americas, originally known as Maroons. Managing to escape from their captors, they formed independent settlements in the Caribbean jungles and mountains where they protected themselves and often joined the local indigenous tribes. In a geographical space that stretches from the southern United States to Brazil and covers sixteen countries, Féger photographs traditional cultural practices maintained mainly by descendants of enslaved Africans, celebrating the memory of their peers, their identities and ways of being.
