Shine heroes I Heróis do brilho
Três mil engraxates saem diariamente pelas ruas dos subúrbios de La Paz e El Alto, em busca de clientes. Eles são de todas as idades e, nos últimos anos, tornaram-se um fenômeno social na capital boliviana. O projeto Shine Heroes foi realizado ao longo de três anos, envolvendo a colaboração de sessenta engraxates, associados à ONG Hormigón Armado, planejando juntos narrativas e cenas em histórias em quadrinhos, jornais e zines. A profissão enfrenta forte discriminação, a tal ponto que os engraxates usam máscaras de esqui para não serem reconhecidos. Assim, em seus bairros e escolas, ninguém sabe o que fazem profissionalmente e mesmo suas famílias acreditam que eles têm um ofício diferente. A máscara os torna invisíveis e, ao mesmo tempo, os une num anonimato coletivo que figura uma tribo, uma identidade e uma força de resistência à exclusão. Federico, no trabalho que realiza coletivamente com esses grupos, transforma essas personalidades ocultas e impactadas pela discriminação em figuras heroicas, que lutam para trazer beleza e bem-estar à sociedade, mesmo que não sejam compreendidos por ela.

3000 shoe shiners go out into the streets of La Paz and El Alto suburbs each day searching for clients. They are of all ages and in recent years have become a social phenomenon in the Bolivian capital. What characterizes this tribe is the use of ski masks so those around them will not recognize them. They confront the discrimination they face through these masks; in their neighborhoods no one knows that they work as shoe shiners, at school, they hide this fact, and even their own families believe they have a different job when they head down to the center of the city from El Alto. The mask is their strongest identity, which makes them invisible while at the same time unites them. This collective anonymity makes them tougher when facing the rest of society and is their resistance against the exclusion they suffer because they carry out this work. For three years, I have been collaborating with sixty shoe shiners associated with the NGO “Hormigón Armado”. We planned together the scenes during a series of graphic novels workshops, incorporating the local elements of the urbanity of El Alto and producing photographic sessions with them as co-authors of a photo essay to fight against their social discrimination.
